2005-11-30 - METALLICA Begin Rehearsing For New Album

On November 29, 2005, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich spoke to the Danish newspaper B.T. about his relationship with Danish Hollywood actress Connie Nielsen (photo).

"Fuck, where do I begin? We have the language, the culture, the sarcasm and the irony in common. We have…yeah, the whole package, because she understands me," Ulrich told the newspaper in a phone interview while being driven from New York City to JFK Airport.

The couple had been in town to celebrate Connie's son Sebastian's 15th birthday and were now returning to the Ulrich's estate in the wealthy Tiburon district in the San Francisco Bay Area.

"Yes, it looks like Connie has moved in with me," the drummer confirmed. "We're taking everything day by day, but she's sitting next to me right now.

"Connie has been — how would you say it in Danish? — a pleasant addition to my life over the last couple of years. It's been nice to have had the Danish side of me become more prominent. To take short trips to Denmark and have a summer vacation with her family in Nordjylland."

Is it because you're afraid of losing touch with your roots that the "Danishness" has become more important to you?

"You know what? That might very well be the case. At any rate, it's something that you definitely want to hold on to and that becomes more and more important when you're a 41-year-old living abroad."

Upon Ulrich’s return to San Francisco later on November 29, METALLICA were due to start the very first rehearsals for the band’s ninth studio album.

"I wouldn't say that I have a plan or an idea of where we're headed, but to kickstart METALLICA once again makes me happy like a kid."

Lars and Connie will be celebrating Christmas in San Francisco together with Connie's son Sebastian and Lars' two sons, Layne, 4, and Myles, 7 (with estranged wife Skylar Ulrich). Joining them will be Lars' father Torben Ulrich, who will be accompanied by his wife Molly.

Do you want to get married again?

Lars: "Yeah, well, first I have to get divorced [laughs], so let's take everything nice and slow, OK? Very, very slow."

Your girlfriend has told one of the other [Danish] newspapers that she would love to have more children, so now you are forced to oblige…

"What? She has what? That pleases me, that pleases me," chuckles Lars.

In the latest issue of Guitar World, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of METALLICA's landmark "Master of Puppets" album, METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett gets quizzed by the magazine readers and a host of metal luminaries, including MASTODON, LAMB OF GOD, EXODUS, EVERY TIME I DIE and AVENGED SEVENFOLD. A few excerpts from the question-and-answer session follow:

Mark Morton (LAMB OF GOD): When "Master of Puppets" was finished, did the band realize it had created such an important piece of heavy metal history?

Kirk Hammett: "'Master of Puppets' wasn't written with that intention; we just wanted to make the best album we could. For us, it was just another METALLICA album. We had put out 'Kill 'Em All' and it was a great album. We put out 'Ride the Lightning' and it seemed to have all the elements of 'Kill 'Em All' and then some. Then we put out 'Master' and we were very proud of it. It was like having another feather in our cap.

"At that point, we were firing on all cylinders and the songs just kept coming, so we really seized the moment. After we finished the album, we wetn straight out on tour. We were very intent on getting the music out to the people and touring as much as humanly possible. But Cliff's death changed all of that.

"None of us had any idea 'Master of Puppets' would still sound fresh after 20 years. I mean, I put it on the other day and the albbum' sound, songs and concepts are just as relevant today as they were back then."

Doc Coyle (GOD FORBID): Can you pinpoint a time when you feel METALLICA was at its creative peak, or do you feel that time has yet to come?

Kirk Hammett: "That's hard to answer. Maybe if you ask me that question in 20 years, I can give you a better answer. At this point in time, I can see many different creative peaks in our career. 'Master of Puppets' and the Black Album were definitely peaks. The symphony album ['S&M'] was a different kind of peak, while 'St. Anger' was yet another completely different peak. We've peaked in so many different ways. Some people would also say we have had a lot of valleys, too… which is a fair statement. [laughs]

"I think METALLICA have a lot more to say. We're the type of band that likes to experiment. We don't like to stay in one spot for too long; all the albums after the Black Album prove that. We're not afraid to take artistc risks, even at the cost of pissing off our audience and our friends."

Zacky Vengeance (AVENGED SEVENFOLD): I fucking loved "St. Anger". It seemed like you went back to your roots, said "Fuck you!" and did something totally different. And though I can see that dropping the solos was part of that attitude, I do miss them. When you record your next album, are you gonna throw some solos back on it?

Kirk Hammett: "For the next album, Lars is going to be sitting there with his snare drum, and I'm going to come in and play a 78-minute guitar solo. Then James is going to scream over it while Rob puts his low end on there. [laughs] Just kidding, man.

"To be quite honest, I think the band misses solos just as much as the fans do. I mean, I play guitar solos every day! We've all expressed the fact that we think guitar solos are fun. They're dynamic, expressive and another distinct aspect of METALLICA's music. And we miss that aspect."

Harry Meyers: Have you ever considered recording a solo album?

Kirk Hammett: "Yeah. Eventually I'll record one, but right now my loyalties remain with METALLICA. I've been writing music for METALLICA for over 20 years, but obviously there are certain things I've written that don't belong on METALLICA albums. As a result, I have a small surplus of music.

"But you know, if I put out a solo album, don't expect it to be a super-duty heavy metal shred album; it's gonna be something that you've never heard before, or at least something you'd never expect from me. Recently, I played with a contemporary classical string quartet in San Francisco named FLUX. It was a collaborative piece, with two violins, viola, cello, cello, classical guitar and me on electric guitar. I gotta say, I don't think I've ever heard anything like the stuff we were doing. I thought, 'Well, if I ever do a solo album, maybe I'll do it with some classical players.' But really, I'm only using this as an example to show that, if I put out a solo album, it'll be something very eclectic. I'd like to share that side of my playing with people someday, but now is not the right time. My loyalty is to maintain the METALLICA legacy."

2005-09-08 - METALLICA Video Game cancelado?

According to the Krawall Gaming Network (KGN) online games magazine, Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) has abandoned plans to release a multi-platform vehicle combat action game featuring music, voice-overs and inspiration from METALLICA. The game, which was announced in June 2003, was reportedly called off because Vivendi felt that the project's creative direction didn't pass the quality standards set by the company.

METALLICA had previously signed an exclusive multi-year agreement with Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) granting the company the worldwide rights to publish and distribute the action game. The game — which was described in a June 2003 press release as "a high-action, third-person vehicle combat game packed with fully customized vehicles and weaponry, endless terrain and desperate, murderous opponents" — was slated to include voice-overs from band members, incidental background music and other exclusive content from METALLICA. Under terms of the contract, METALLICA were also expected to record an original song exclusively for the game along with a music video featuring elements from the interactive experience.

RiverFrontTimes.com: If [METALLICA's Lars Ulrich] and Ringo Starr [of THE BEATLES] got into a fight, who'd win?

Jaymz Lennfield: "Definitely Lars. Ringo's a really smart guy, but Lars has a ridiculous amount of energy. When he called me up about the cease-and-desist order [in February, BEATALLICA found themselves on the ugly end of a cease-and-desist order from Sony, demanding that they shut down their heavily trafficked site for good], he was out on the slopes on a skiing vacation with his family in Colorado and the guy was talking a mile a minute. Every few words would have to be bleeped out. I wouldn't want to mess with that guy."

On their upcoming European tour:

Jaymz Lennfield: "We definitely like to play dress-up, but we're a real band — these guys can play. You remember that scene from 'The Blues Brothers' where they have the fence up around them as they're playing? Well, we need to have chainlink fence up just to keep Krk [Hammettson, BEATALLICA guitarist] from jumping out from the stage and landing on people. He's ruined so much perfectly good equipment that way."

2005-09-07 - Kirk e a colaboração com o FLUX QUARTET (Quarteto de Cordas que toca musica classica)

Joshua Kosman do the San Francisco Chronicle entrevistou recentemente Kirk Hammett acerca da sua colaboração no próximo dia 15 de Setembro com um quarteto de cordas o FLUX QUARTET no Herbst Theatre, San Francisco.

"When I think of classical music, I immediately think of Bach or Beethoven," Hammett said. "I've had very little experience with contemporary classical music.

"But when I heard this piece, it was very interesting. It's atmospheric, almost like a movie soundtrack. And after looking at the score and hearing the piece, I thought, 'Why not?' It takes me far enough out of my safety zone to challenge me."

"The combination of METALLICA and FLUX might seem like an aesthetic stretch," said Chiu, "but the piece has that built-in flexibility, so that when a collaborator comes in, it just means a new interpretation of the piece.

"The important thing to know is that we're not doing a cover of a METALLICA song. We're inviting him into what we do, and to do something collaborative that allows him to express what he's about."

It was Gropman — who in addition to running the Morrison Series and teaching classical guitar at San Francisco State University is co-owner of Cafe La Haye in Sonoma — who brokered the deal. Hammett had become a regular patron at the restaurant, and the two had struck up a friendship; when Gropman needed a starry opening lineup for the anniversary season, he knew where to turn. Kirk is passionate about food, about music — about all kinds of music," he said. "He's the kind of person who can help bring in a whole new audience for chamber music."

2005-09-02 - VOIVOD: O Adeus Final da Familia e Amigos ao PIGGY

Os ex-membros dos VOIVOD Jean-Yves Theriault (a.k.a. Blacky) e Eric Forrest eram um dos presentes no funeral do guitarrista dos VOIVOD Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, que morreu de cancro do colon no dia 26 de Agosto no Hospital de Montreal. O funeral realizou-se no dia 1 Setembro em Jonquière, Quebec onde foi simbolicamente queimada uma guitarra sendo as suas cinzas deitadas no rio Sable.

Entretanto os restantes membros vocalista Denis "Snake" Belanger, Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) e o baterista Michel "Away" Langevin — irão voltar às sessões de gravação do 14º album da banda, que verá a luz do dia no início de 2006 via The End Records.

Horas antes de entrar em coma profundo, D'Amour deu instruções a Langevin para que este fosse ao seu computador pessoal retirar as linhas de guitarra em que o guitarrista tinha estado a trabalhar para o novo album. De acordo com Snake,o album será um tributo ao falecido guitarrista "tthe album will be the definitive VOIVOD" effort. "I am sure that Piggy would trust us to complete the project as a tribute to him."

2005-08-16 - METALLICA como banda de abertura para os ROLLING STONES?

Fonte da agencia alemã de bilhetes Eventim.de, refere que METALLICA irá tocar alguns concertos durante a digressão dos ROLLING STONES. Não existe ainda confirmação oficial por parte das bandas e dos Tour Managers acerca da notícia.

METALLICA está confirmado como banda de abertura para os ROLLING STONES nos dias 13 e 15 de Novembro em San Francisco's SBC Park, irão fazer parte do cartaz bandas como PEARL JAM, MAROON 5, JOHN MAYER TRIO, BECK and the BLACK EYED PEAS.

Numa declaração da banda pode ler-se:

"After having the thrill of playing with some of our personal heroes such as AC/DC, DEEP PURPLE, IRON MAIDEN and OZZY (OSBOURNE), how could we say 'no' to the quintessential rock band, who are in some way responsible for all of this?"

"These two shows are about nothing other than having fun and playing music ... nothing to sell, nothing to promote, nothing to talk about, , no fuckin' agenda at all. 2005-06-09 - Ex METALLICA Bassist Launches HEARD OF ELEMENTS Project

Ex METALLICA and current VOIVOD bassist Jason Newsted recently teamed up with Roy Rogers (slide/blues guitar master) and Carl Coletti (formerly with Ottmar Liebert ) to create a new project called HEARD OF ELEMENTS . They wrote and recorded four brand new songs, which they are sharing first with all of their fans. Check it out at this location . A photo of the band can be found here .

VOIVOD recently completed the songwriting for their follow-up to 2003's "Voivod" , tentatively due before the end of the year. Drummer Away (a.k.a. Michel Langevin ) has described the new material as containing "a bit of an eerie vibe, with experimental vocals by Snake , spiralling solos by Piggy and heaviness courtesy of Jasonic !"

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett is featured on guitar legend Carlos Santana 's new album, entitled "All That I Am" , which is due for release on September 13. Kirk provides guitar parts in one of the songs on the album, which also includes various other artists collaborating on other songs.

Kirk has previously worked with Carlos in 2001 at a live show benefit in San Francisco. Carlos was also invited into the HQ studio in 2002 while the band were recording "St. Anger" .

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke to the U.K.'s Times Online about groupies, rehab and frontman envy, among other topics. Several interview excerpts follow:

On groupies:

"You would meet somebody. Then you would sleep with them and then you would decide like whether you liked them or not, whether you would continue to sleep with them and whether you could actually tolerate being with them during the day."

On the dissolution of his marriage to Skylar (with whom he has two children):

“We see each other all the time. We share the kids. It's all good. As far as those things go, it's about as good as it gets and as civilized as it gets."

On the fact that he was monogamously "wedded" to METALLICA prior to the mid-'90s:

"My life was one-dimensional. It was all about METALLICA. There was nothing else. It wasn't really until some time in the mid-Nineties when all of a sudden you sit there and you start thinking about kids and settling down that the one-dimensionality of the whole thing starts becoming . . . a little unfulfilling. I felt the hardest thing for me in the wake of our success was trying to figure out who I was and establishing my own identity, coming to grips with 'Who is Lars?' and not just 'Who's Lars, the drummer of METALLICA?' "

On the "Some Kind of Monster" documentary's finest moment when he tells James Hetfield to fuck himself:

"Over the course of a few months all this resentment just kind of built up and it all came out that one afternoon. After sitting around and waiting for his ass for a year and then he comes in and says, 'I have to leave every day at 4pm,' it was like, 'What the fuck?'"

On whether he suffers from "frontman-envy":

"Frontman envy? No, I mean we've been battling for poll position in this band pretty much since day one and I came to realize that the only thing we could ever agree on is that me and him were the leaders and whoever else was around were the followers."

On his friendship with James Hetfield:

"Me and James lived together for four years. We lived in the same room. I'd sleep in that corner, he'd sleep in that corner and he'd have his girlfriend around in his and I'd sit there and listen to them have sex. On all these types of levels we lived that: we ate together, we travelled together, we played, we drank, we screwed."

On whether they ever ended up with the same girls:

"I can't say that hasn’t happened. You know you’ve got to remember I met him 24 years ago. He is my brother in arms."

On whether James Hetfield is the greater talent:

"At what? Musically? Than me? I mean he has a very effortless relationship with music. It just pours out, but he needs someone to edit him — and that's where I come in. Is he the greater talent? Great question! Nobody's ever asked me that! I would hope he's the greater talent because if he's not, then God help us!"

On whether or not the "Some Kind of Monster" has caused damage to METALLICA in the eyes of their hardcore fans:

"I'm sitting here with The Times. Outside Channel 4 is waiting to talk to me. I guess someone is still interested in what we have to say and that's not only pretty amazing after 25 years, it's humbling."

Alastair Jamieson of Scotsman.com is reporting that research suggests Germans favor guitar-led songs by bands such as AC/DC and METALLICA to be played at their funeral, while Italians and Spaniards prefer more classical music.

More than 45,000 adults across Europe were polled on their choice of funeral tune by digital television channel, Music Choice.

QUEEN's "The Show Must Go On" was voted No 1 funeral song by one in five Europeans, with LED ZEPPELIN's "Stairway to Heaven" coming in second and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" third.

QUEEN's "Who Wants to Live Forever" and METALLICA's "Nothing Else Matters" also featured strongly.

In the U.K., ROBBIE WILLIAMS' "Angels" came out top, followed by the FRANK SINATRA anthem "My Way". Among other popular British choices were BETTE MIDLER's "Wind Beneath My Wings" as well as "Amazing Grace".

The European results were also broken down country by country. Norway's favourites include "Time to Say Goodbye" by ANDREA BOCELLI and "Viva Las Vegas" by ELVIS. The French top five was dominated by French music, while MOZART's "Requiem" was the top choice in Italy. Spaniards and Finns prefer ALBINONI's mournful "Adagio For Strings".

Rebecca Barrett, of Music Choice, said: "Music can be very personal, indeed it often helps create a sense of identity. Wanting to share your most treasured musical gem with those you're leaving behind is the perfect way to sign off and leave a lasting impression.

"It is interesting that the French preferred French songs and classical music and didn't really go for the sort of heavy rock metal that is popular in Germany. There was such a different set of choices between those two countries."

Serial killer Richard Paul White (photo), one of Colorado's most notorious killers, recently spoke from jail about his crimes. He has confessed to six murders in the Denver area. A lifetime of untreated mental illness, heavy metal music and violent movies drove him to kill, he said, in an exclusive interview with CBS4 Denver News reporter Rick Sallinger.

Music was a big influence in his life, White said. His spree of killing was accompanied by a soundtrack of heavy metal.

"METALLICA probably the most," he said.

A set of lyrics stand out: "Guilty as charged, but damn it, it ain't right, there's someone else controlling me." (from METALLICA's "Ride the Lightning" off the album of the same name.)

Music by LINKIN PARK would also play in the background.

"I would listen, actually, to LINKIN PARK before I would kill," White said. "And, while I was killing usually that music LINKIN PARK was on."

A childhood of abuse, coupled with untreated mental illness, set the stage. A society filled with violence did little to hold back White.

White talked about movies he would watch that influenced him to kill.

Add to the mix violent video games, such as Doom, that White played.

ContactMusic.com is reporting that METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has confirmed the heavy metal band will be immortalized in a computer game.

Poking fun at last year's METALLICA documentary "Some Kind of Monster", Ulrich has also made it clear there will be no group therapy levels in the game.

The 41-year-old says, "With the computer game, there is definitely truth to that (appearing).

"It won't just be a game where you have to get Lars and James and Kirk through the tour without breaking up, or any of that horseshit."

However, Ulrich has dismissed the possibility of a METALLICA greatest hits album: "As far as a hits record is concerned, that's not something we're entertaining."

He says, "There's stuff in there that could be interesting for some people, but not for everybody.

"With some of the four or five-hour therapy sessions we went through — which have been poked fun at, and I appreciate that as well as the next 'Spinal Tap' aficionado - maybe we could do something where we left those things unedited, maybe for a two- or three-hour thing.

"Who knows? We can do it for the 12 people in the fan club who have insomnia!"

2005-02-04 - MetallicA não irá contribuir para a banda sonora do filme "Batman Begins"

Launch Radio Networks is reporting that METALLICA's management denied earlier this week that the band was contributing a previously unreleased song to the soundtrack of the upcoming movie, "Batman Begins". While the band does have music left over from 2001's pre-"St. Anger" recording sessions, it's not clear whether any of that material will ever see the light of day. Frontman James Hetfield said there's always a chance that the band could revisit those tracks for the next METALLICA album. "We might, but that also depends on what we've got cooked up with Rob (Trujillo, bassist), you know," he told Launch. "We want to move forward as well. It's almost as if we should leave those things as they are, as the, you know, 'Here are the stepping stones to 'St. Anger',' you know. But I think moving forward with Rob is pretty important."

Robert Trujillo joined METALLICA after the recording of "St. Anger" was completed.

METALLICA plans to begin working on their next album sometime later this year.
